The A/C compressor is a critical part of all vehicle's A/C system.  Over time the clutch or other internal components can fail, leading to belt breakage (a result of bearing/clutch faliure) and loss of cooling.

It is recommended to have these installs performed by a knowledgeable A/C technician, as special tools are required to properly service the A/C system.
