The Z1 Frontier / Xterra X-Pro Coilover System was developed to meet the unique demands of vehicles that must perform reliably in both off-road and on-road environments. The design directive emphasized off-road performance (particularly stability and control) without introducing the compromises in noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) that often accompany performance suspension systems when used on the street.

Development & Testing

During the development phase, each iteration underwent in-house dyno testing to validate valve profiles and damping curves. The engineering team focused on optimizing a mildly digressive valve profile, chosen for its ability to deliver firm, controlled damping at low shaft speeds (body roll, pitch, and dive) while allowing increased flow at higher shaft speeds to absorb larger bumps and impacts without excessive harshness. This dual-characteristic behavior is central to maintaining confidence in off-road conditions while ensuring comfort and composure during highway driving.

At the heart of the X-Pro is a 56mm diameter piston housed within a 2.44” (62mm) steel shock body. The increased piston size improves fluid displacement, damping response, and thermal stability. Paired with the 2.44” steel body finished in a heavy-duty electrophoretic black paint, the X-Pro benefits from increased oil volume and robust structural integrity. The combination enhances resistance to shock fade during sustained off-road use and ensures long-term reliability under heavy cycling loads.


Extended Travel Design

One of the defining features of the X-Pro system is its extended travel shock architecture. With 125mm of usable stroke, these coilovers provide greater suspension articulation compared to standard travel designs in the same application. The increased stroke enhances wheel travel, allowing the suspension to better follow terrain, maintain tire contact, and improve traction in off-road conditions. Despite the longer travel range, the shocks were engineered to maintain proper ride height adjustability (2”- 3” of lift) and on-road stability. This balance is achieved through precise packaging of the 56mm piston within the 2.44” steel body, ensuring durability and consistency under both compression and rebound extremes.

The X-Pro utilizes a gas-charged monotube architecture, chosen for its superior consistency compared to twin-tube designs. The monotube layout allows for larger piston sizes and improved heat management while minimizing cavitation within the damping fluid. This architecture is particularly advantageous in off-road applications where extended suspension cycling can quickly expose weaknesses in thermal efficiency and fluid stability.


Mounting & Adjustability

While spherical bearings are common in performance coilovers, they often transmit undesirable noise and vibration into the chassis. For the X-Pro, Z1 specified bushing-style top hats and eyelets. This design reduces NVH without eliminating the compliance and articulation required in off-road scenarios. The result is a suspension system that offers precise damping control while maintaining the refinement expected for daily-driven vehicles.

The X-Pro coilovers provide 2”- 3” of lift adjustment through threaded preload collars, allowing users to fine-tune ride height and spring preload for different load conditions. With available spring rates of 500 lb/in and 600 lb/in, the system can be configured for lighter builds prioritizing comfort or heavier setups demanding increased load capacity and roll control.

I had installed the Nismo lift/leveling kit on my Pro-4X along with the Nismo control arms. My truck still had a nose-down stance. I installed these extended travel coil/shocks with the 600# springs and it brought the nose up so the truck is level now. They came with a 1-3/4" pre-load, and it worked perfectly with the Nismo rear leaf spring spacing blocks. The ride is slightly stiffer, but not harsh.

600 lbs spring rate rides smooth and compliant on road. Very good low NVH. Definitely a lot smoother than the extended Radflos with 650 lbs springs. Only went off roading once so far but they did great. I have about 160 lbs of added weight and on the front for reference. Only complaint is the lack of ability to adjust the height while on the truck. You have to remove the coilovers completely, use a spring compressor and then spin the collar accordingly. Overall a good coilover system.

Have had them on for about a month now and can't figure out if I'm more stoked with the off-road or on-road capability with these coilovers. The mildly digressive profile was a pleasant surprise even with 600lbs springs, making the drive up a mountain hwy pass much more enjoyable. But also appreciate the small bump sensitivity living on a dirt road with an insane amounts of pot holes. They came out of the box set up great but I did adjust the collar a few turns just to get another quarter inch of lift on my Pro4X, didn't notice any difference in ride quality.

I used these after I put the Titan motor in the stock nismo ones had sag. The only thing that I was worried about was installing with the Rough country top hat spacers I had to install the valve facing inwards I was worried about lower control arm contact breaking off the valve but at full sag and fully depressed not even close to contact so all is good

These coilovers are exactly what they are advertised as. Incredible both off-road and on-road and worth every penny imo. I've adjusted them about 1" higher than when they came out of the box with the 600lb coil springs and there is zero change in ride quality. I would also like to add that they handle unexpected potholes or speed bumps extremely and surprisingly well.
