Product Description

Z1's Nissan Frontier Catch Can Kit is now available for all 3.8L and 4.0L V6 models!

The Z1 catch can uses a baffled flow path and steel mesh screen to filter oil and other particulates, trapping them in the catch can while recirculating gasses back through the intake. Removing oil particulates allows the vehicle's PCV system to work more efficiently keeping your intake system cleaner.

On port injection engines like the '05-'19 Nissan Frontier's VQ40, fuel is injected into the intake reducing carbon buildup on the intake valves as it enters the combustion chamber. While this lessens intake buildup, it does not completely prevent it. On direct injection engines like the VQ38 found in the 2020+ Nissan Frontier, intake valves don't benefit from the cleaning effect of the fuel and can experience high amounts of oil and carbon buildup. Engines with an excessive amount of carbon build-up on the intake valves can suffer from a loss of power as airflow over the valve is restricted.  Additionally, this build-up can interfere with the valve seat and prevent the valve from sealing causing larger issues. For these reasons, we highly recommend catch cans on engines.

To elaborate the PCV system is intended to function on your engine in 2 ways

  1.  As a Crank Case Breather in high load situations to reduce the chance of crankcase pressure (in the engine but outside of the combustion chamber) which can harm seals and reduce performance
  2.  As a cleaner in idle and light load situations (by reducing pressure on the crankcase with engine vacuum).  Commonly referred to as the "Evaporative" mode, when operating in engine vacuum oil vapor and droplets can pass directly through the PCV valve (which has no baffle) and directly into the intake manifold.  This process helps remove un-burned fuel contaminates that have gotten past the rings from the lubrication system and sends it through the combustion chamber and to the catalytic converters to help reduce emissions.

When operating as a "Breather" the crankcase air and vapor is passed through an internal baffle system built into the valve cover, this elaborate system features multiple turns and drains to remove particulate matter (oil droplets etc).  This system typically does a great job even on upgraded or somewhat worn engines.  It is uncommon to find measurable traces of oil in the intake track ahead of the throttle body but downstream of the port where this is vented back into the system after the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor).  A catch can is really not applicable or needed for this portion of the system in most applications.

The Z1 Catch is a major upgrade on the "Evaporative" side of the system.  When un-burned fuel and oil contaminates get past the PCV valve they collect in the intake manifold, this particulate contamination hurts performance a few ways.  Most frequently in transient throttle situations from low throttle angle to high throttle angle, the airborne contaminants can flow directly into the combustion chamber as a "dirty mix" with the fuel, this dirty mix can effectively offset the rated octane of your fuel leading to "spark knock" and when sensed by the knock sensors a reduction in spark advance; ultimately this means less power when you want it.  When not in the direct burn scenario the particles pass into the intake manifold they often find a surface to stick to, this particulate aggregate builds up over time and can lead to what is a semi-solid sludge in "port injection" engines and often a more solid blockage of the intake runners on "direct-injected" engines, both can lead to significant degradation of performance over time.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

An optional catch can drain kit makes service a breeze by relocating the drain to a lower position, putting it within reach during oil changes. A knurled fitting is easy to grab, even with slippery fingers while the mess-free center drain reduces the chance of spills during service. Learn more about the catch can drain kit HERE.

Pretty good product, well built, went on pretty easy. I would suggest for those that buy the drain kit with this product. Get -6 ORB 90 degree fitting to help clear the upper radiator hose for those that encounter that issue, so they can screw that fitting into the bottom of the catch can so it can be drained.

Simple install. Surprised me that there were little to no instructions out there or videos on line. But simple enough to watch generic videos and then install this with the limited instructions provided.

I'd like to give it a five star but there was one minor issue and I suspect Z1 will listen to this review along with a email that I sent to them to make a correction. I've learned they're pretty good at listening to customers. Why a four-star review? Mainly for the fact that I got the drain kit and it wasn't exactly perfect. When I first installed my catch cam I noticed that my vehicle was using an excessive amount of fuel and the mpg sucked. I was having a hard time figuring it out and figured it out a few weeks later. Keep in mind I have the drain kit supplied by z1. The issue with the drain kit they provide you is the Street fitting that screws into the bottom of the catch can. That's straight fitting with the hose installed runs right into the upper radiator hose. Doesn't matter if you have the factory throttle body or Z1 throttle body installed. I also damage the seal by accident that was on that fitting which created my lean condition. When I figured that out I went ahead and removed the catch can temporarily for a few weeks. After taking some time to run to a look hydraulic store, I was able to get two different fittings to connect to the catch can. This included a nice adjustable 90° fitting with a compatible fitting to connect to the hose. Once I installed those with drain kit on my truck I made sure that there was no more leaks. At that point I was very satisfied as I did notice using my scan gauge 2 that my fuel mileage seems to be up a little bit. This is most likely due to the cleaner air and fuel intake charge going into the engine. Overall I can say that I do recommend the catch can, but I would highly recommend that you get the appropriate 90° fittings for the drain kit if you're going to get that. Hopefully Z1 will make the 90° fitting available before you make a purchase of the drain kit.

Just installed my catch can. The hardest part was getting the old hose off and the new hose and clamp on the passenger side valve cover. I had to use vice grips instead of needle nose pliers. The rest of the install was a breeze. I have had 2 induction services done at the dealer, at 60K and 120k. Hopefully the catch can will keep it clean.

Easy to install for "do it yourselfers" only time will tell if it helps with direct injection valve problems. 🤞 The addition of an oil catch can will help with removing the oil vapers that would have been recirculated through the intake system for a much cleaner burn in the combustion chamber. I plan on keeping my 2021 Nissan Frontier forever. When it comes time to tear into the motor, that's when we'll see how the oil catch can did it's job.
