Z1's 350Z Active Baffle Oil Pan is a MUST HAVE for cars driven in demanding environments. This bolt-on replacement for the stock pan increases oil capacity while utilizing active baffles to keep oil at the pick-up at all times.Nissan's VQ-series engines have what is called a "wet-sump" oil system. This means that engine oil is stored in the oil pan and fed to the oil pump through an oil pickup tube that extends to the bottom of the pan, or the "wet sump". Oil picked up by the pump from the pan is then distributed throughout the engine to reduce friction and wear on moving parts. When experiencing hard corning forces, oil is pulled to the side of the oil pan and away from the oil pickup tube which can result in varying degrees of oil starvation. Extended periods of oil starvation can result in extensive wear and damage to the rotating assembly and valvetrain. The goal of the Z1 Active Baffled Oil Pan is to capture oil inside of a chamber in the center of the oil pan, providing the engine with a constant supply of oil regardless of the cornering load.
How does it work?
An aluminum plate is installed on each side of the oil pickup tube, creating a chamber where oil is stored. Installed on these plates are two active one-way flaps that allow oil to enter the chamber where the oil pickup tube is found without giving the oil the ability to flow back out. As oil returns to the oil pan, it pushes the active flaps open allowing oil to enter the chamber. When experiencing high cornering forces, one side of the flaps are forced closed, trapping oil inside the chamber while the opposing side opens allowing oil to fill the chamber. This constant supply of oil prevents starvation and ensures your engine's lubrication system can work at its maximum potential in all conditions. The baffle flaps are manufactured from Viton rubber, exceeding the necessary requirements for temperature and oil submersion. A passive baffle plate is added to the to top of the pan, to prevent oil from sloshing backwards under acceleration. Nissan added this to Rev-Up upper oil pans in 2005, we elected to make this a standard feature for all DE's by adding it to the lower pans. Rev-Up models will discard the factory plate installed in their upper oil pan.
