This should be checked whenever the timing belt is replaced. A cost effective alternative to replacing the complete timing belt tensioner assembly is to replace the pulley and bearing assembly. In most cases tensioner failures are the result of a failing bearing in the pulley and the tensioner assembly itself is often still good.
