OEM Fan Clutch found on the 2005-2015 Nissan Xterra.
It's a good design but after over 10 years of use, most are simply worn out. Some fail by becoming too loose resulting in the fan spinning slower, often eventually resulting in overheating and catastrophic engine damage. Others fail by locking down and spinning at full engine speed all the time. When this happens the increased drag will rob considerable power and you will hear the sound of a lot of air rushing at idle and low speed.
Do not replace a defective Xterra fan clutch with a cheap aftermarket part from your local auto parts store! From vast experience we consider these cheap aftermarket replacements are defective out of the box. They are always too tight resulting in excessive drag on your engine and do not look like the original Nissan part.
We also recommend checking and replacing the plastic mechanical fan blade that mounts to the fan clutch. Years of heat and stress often cause deep cracks in the plastic around the base or even the blades.
